Life Gardens campaign 06

The Tranplantation event took place on the 11th of July 2019. The Life garden campaign is based in an educational environment, therefore the Matswathaka learners were given the opportunity to be involved in the transplantation event. Through student engagement the campaign hopes to grow and remain sustainable as learners will now have the knowledge to expand on the gardens and also create their own organic household gardens in order to alleviate hunger within the broader Bethlehem community. #SustainableChangeProject #LifeGardenCampaign #UJHonsStratcomm

Life Gardens Campaign 05

The chosen school for the implementation of the life garden campaign is Matswathaka Public School. Matswathaka is a public school situated in the Free State in a small town called Bethlehem. The school carries out the feeding scheme programme and has a total of 1100 learners according to the Principal, Mr Mako. Learners are said to receive one meal a day @09:30 and that is the only meal. Through research some of these learners come from very poor backgrounds, therefore hunger is a chronic problem. the aim of this campaign is to work hand in hand with the feeding scheme so that learners can be able to eat more than once a day. #HungerHurtsLetHungerKickTheCan! #SustainabilityChangeProject #LifeGardenCampain #UJStratcommHons

Life Gardens campaign 04

after weeks of nurturing the seeds by watering them 2 times a day and making sure that they endure enough sunlight to grow, the majority of them were ready for transplantation in time. Growing the seedlings in tins and containers has been an intentional strategy. The campaign is based on sustainability, and even through the focus is on goal number 2 of the UN sustainability goal, it is also important to implement another as they are some how inter-related. Recycling (by reusing empty food tiny and containers), also forms an important aspect of the campaign. Sustainable agriculture consists of different elements, and for the life gardens campaign, water, organic soil with no chemicals and recycling form the basis. #SustainabilityChangeproject #Lifegardencampaign #UJhonsStratcomm

Life Gardens Campaign 01

The life gardens campaign is a UJ hons project based on the 2nd UN sustainability goal of zero hunger and since the context is sustainability, this campaign incorporates the element of recycling and reusing. The life gardens campaign uses empty food tins and containers to grow seedlings for the ultimate school garden. On the 5th of June a door to door was conducted in order to collect empty food tins and containers and 31 tins and containers were successfully collected( see next post)

The life gardens campaign is a hunger alleviation project that is based on goal 2 of the UN 2030 sustainability goals. The main objective of the life gardens project is to alleviate childhood hunger and malnutrition in the Bethlehem community due to lack of food. By complementing the work done by the feeding scheme program, with supporting  the families of these children through the organic gardens. By implementing these gardens the children will now be able to have more than one meal at school and they will also receive nutritious vegetables from the gardens that they can take home to their families. By achieving this goal the life gardens project will create a small positive change that is part of a big change that is needed.
